An Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) councillor candidate has been shot dead in Pietermaritzburg.
Police have confirmed Thulani Shangase from Msunduzi's Ward 20 was killed in Plessislaer on Sunday night.
Spokesperson Vish Naidoo says the Kwanyamazane resident was apparently returning from an EFF campaign meeting when he was attacked.
"We have mobilised the 72-hour Activation Plan, which entails the mobilisation of specialised units such as Crime Intelligence, the KZN Political Task Team, Detectives and DPCI to ensure that evidence, intelligence and information, which can help track and arrest those responsible, is gathered."
EFF uMgungundlovu regional secretary David Msomi says they were called last night by a member of Shangase's family.
He says they don't have much information at the moment.
"We found our member lying down dead. At the moment we have no information. We are going to visit the family.”
Msomi says they believe that the shooting may have been politically motivated.
