EFF calls for accountability over bodies burnt in Mozambique

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) wants the government to hold the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) commander deployed to the SADC Mission in Mozambique accountable for soldiers involved in the burning of bodies in a viral video.

The clip, circulating on social media, shows soldiers throwing a corpse over a pile of burning rubble with at least one other body already in the flames.

Soldiers can be seen pouring liquid over the body, while others, including one wearing an SANDF uniform, are watching from the side and filming on their mobile phones.

The SANDF issued a statement on Tuesday, confirming that an investigation surrounding the involvement of its members is ongoing.

EFF national spokesperson, Leigh-Ann Mathys says the party want the government to provide clarity on the identity of the "rogue" military servicemen.

"The South African government is a signatory to international instruments which regulate the conduct of armed conflict.

The Protocols protect people who are no longer able to participate in the conflict including the injured and dead enemy forces,” says Mathys.

“The EFF will write to the Minister responsible for SANDF seeking information on steps taken by the ministry in this regard and to demand swift action against such brazen stupidity resembling the old SANDF Koevoet mercenaries in the border wars of the 80s."
