Education key to addressing skills shortage – Ramaphosa
President Cyril Ramaphosa says in order to address the country's skills shortage government has to work on improving all levels of our education system.
He's highlighted issues around the skills gap and economic inequality at the launch of the Oxford Handbook of the South African Economy.
The handbook, compiled by a range of experts, outlines the country's history, political economy and key challenges.
"The resultant skills gap is also a significant contributor to inequality and undermines efforts to end inter-generational cycle of poverty.
"The only sustainable way to bridge the skills gap is to dramatically improve the performance of all levels of our education system."

"Among other things, this means ensuring that there is a firm link between the skills and competencies being produced and those required in the economy."
Ramaphosa says the handbook provides analysis that will have implications for policymakers on issues like transformation and the impact of the pandemic on our economy.
"While the economy expanded by 4.9% in 2021, the impact of the pandemic continues to be felt throughout the economy and society and we know that there is a yawning gap between where we are and where we need to be."
