Education expert: Matric pass rate needs to be interrogated
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
An education expert says government needs to dissect the matric results, focusing on the quality of the marks achieved by the class of 2023.
Grade 12s attained an overall pass rate of 82.9%.
The UKZN's Professor Vimolan Mudaly says it's concerning that only 40% of students obtained a bachelor's pass.
"I just thought I would caution against joyously celebrating these pass rates. We need to actually interrogate what these pass rates actually mean."
"We have to see more distinctions and we actually have to see more children getting to university for mathematics, science and technological degrees."

Mudaly's advised those wanting to study further to choose their courses wisely.
"Do not rush into any particular course, degree, diploma, choose wisely and work harder than before because post school education is tough and only those who persevere will get the reward. In school our children were spoon fed."
