Only Grades R, 6, and 11 will be going back to school on Monday.
Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga has announced the adjustment to the initial plan - following a meeting with the Council of Education Ministers on Thursday.
Five reports were presented at the meeting - and dealt with various aspects of the phase-in approach to getting pupils back in the classroom.
Last week it was announced that learners from several other grades would be returning to school on 6 July.

But, departmental spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga says after considering the reports they had to change the plan.
"The decision was made to try and help the sector manage the numbers that are expected to return to school.
"But, also having considered the infection rate that is currently taking place in the country and the preparedness for schools to return all learners that have been selected in the different Grades.
" The other Grades will still be phased-in during the month of July and a per the gazette which was made available on 29 June.
