Economist warns of several fuel price hikes to come

Early indications are that motorists will need to fill up on Tuesday before February's expected hefty fuel price hikes kick in.

Data show increases of over 60 centres a litre for both petrol and diesel.
The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy is yet to confirm the adjusted prices, which normally kick in on the first Wednesday of every month.

According to economist Chris Harmse, this may be just the start of several fuel price hikes.
“So, the question is, will oil prices increase much further in months to come? Our international price may go back to $85 to $86 (a barrel), and that will have a detrimental effect, of course, on South Africa's diesel and petrol price."
