Economist: R1 million annual salary for public servants ‘excessive’
Updated | By Newswatch
Economist Azar Jammine says the number of public servants earning over R1 million annually is unsustainable.
Public Service and Administration Minister Noxolo Kiviet recently revealed that the salaries of more than 37.000 civil servants in the national and provincial governments are upwards of this figure.
During the 2023/2024 financial year, R 45.3 billion was spent on their salaries.

Jammine, the chief economist at Econometrix, says a third of total government spending has also been allocated to the compensation of its employees, which is unacceptable.
"One has to look at the degree of service delivery within the public service or the lack thereof and relate that to the productivity of these public servants, and then you realise people are earning way in excess of the amount that they are actually contributing to the economy."
Jammine says the government should be focused on using the money to create more jobs in the country and fix the ailing infrastructure.
