The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs has acknowledged that government's current plan on economic development is likely to fall short of targets to reduce poverty in KZN and the country.

The department’s Avril Williamson has been speaking after the United Nations and local government signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Durban on Wednesday - to help communities and entities affected by the riots in July.
The vandalism and looting during the unrest cost the province over R24 billion.
Some 45 000 jobs were affected.
"One of the key challenges that we still do face is that the development trajectory is not delivering sufficiently on economic growth, social inclusion, spatial integration and we don't also see the fiscal sustainability that we want,” says Williamson.
"So without economic development will not be able to diminish the impact on the triple challenge of poverty, inequality and unemployment. But of course, the unrest in KZN has also further deepened this challenge."
