Lonwabo Solontsi has been convicted on 39 counts of rape, 14 counts of aggravated robbery, seven counts of robbery and a further seven of housebreaking with intent to rape.

The 29-year-old's application for leave to appeal was denied.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson, Captain Mali Govender, says Solontsi's crime spree took place between November 2010 and July 2015 and spanned the three Cape provinces.

Govender says Judge Thami Mbashe described Solontsi as a dangerous criminal.

"She said that she would have imposed 12 life sentences and a total of 706 years imprisonment. However, in handing down her judgment she said that the accused was declared a dangerous criminal and that he be brought before a court at the expiration of 25 years for consideration," she said.
