Easier access to water for KZN drought-affected districts

The mayors of AbaQulusi and uMfolozi say rain over the last week has made very little difference to the dam levels in their districts.

They've welcomed four water storage facilities handed to them by government authorities yesterday at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The transportable tankers with a storage capacity of 80 000 litres each is a step up from the smaller 5 000 litre tanks.

Ten people can fill their buckets at one time out of the tankers.

Abaqulusi Mayor Patience Khaba says the initiative by the Co-operative Governance Department will bring some much needed relief.

"The Klipfontein Dam just went up to 20%. Prior to this, it was at zero. We still need and feel that we have to preserve water," she said.

uMfolozi Mayor Smangaliso Mngenge says it's not just communities affected by the scarcity of water.

"When you go to the dams where we were sourcing water - there are less than 18% or so. Naturally, you'd see animals in all the dams," he said.
