The disruptions were due to minibus taxi protests in the CBD and Sandile Thusi Road (previously Argyle Road).

eThekwini metro police spokesperson Boysie Zungu says the protestors blocked the routes with burning debris.

He urged motorists to stay away from these roads.

"First Avenue and Osbourne, Umgeni And Argyle, please avoid these roads because they are closed due to taxi industry protests."

Sfiso Shangase, who's with taxi council Santaco in KZN, thinks long-distance drivers are behind the protests against the impounding of their vehicles and other issues.

"We are still going to find out whether there is going to be an amicable way of dealing with such a matter because by destroying infrastructure does not address the challenge various individuals are faced with.

"We need to find out why the vehicles are being impounded and they are getting tickets? If there is something untoward, it had be to discussed with relevant authorities."
