DUT suspends registration after fake message causes walk-in horde

The Durban University of Technology says it's suspended its on-campus support for online registrations until further notice.

This after groups of prospective students arrived at the Sports Centre, unexpectedly, yesterday asking that they be allowed to register. The DUT says fake messages - inviting 'walk-ins' - were doing the rounds on social media.

It says strict Covid-19 guidelines that it'd put in place were violated due to the massive influx of people, some unmasked.

The university says going forward it will be contacting all first-year applicants who received firm offers to study at the DUT. Assistance will also be given to registered students only- who qualify for accommodation.

Meanwhile, SRC president, Zabelo Nkandla says it was a very confusing time for those who arrived yesterday.

He claims a communique inviting 'walk-ins' was issued by the institution - which it denies. He says many young people travelled long distances away from home in the hopes of securing a place at the university.

"We are going to be with them so that we get the direction from the officials on how we should work moving forward because they are here together with parents."
