Spokesperson, Alan Khan has been speaking days after a life sentence was handed down to Msizi Mbutho for the murder of DUT first-year student, Sandile Ndlovu.

The varsity's safety measures came under the spotlight in September, and it later emerged that the killer was never a student at the Durban institution.

"The intention is to implement the security upgrades next year. The request for proposals has come and gone. The bid evaluation committee has met, and the tender committee now will just have to make its final decision. So we are really at the end stage of appointing a security services provider," he said.

DUT has been rocked by other crimes this year. Another student and a staff member were attacked and killed.

Khan says they have taken several steps to upgrade security on their campuses.

"In the interim, we have increased visible security, we have serviced the CCTV system, we have increased lighting in high traffic areas to improve safety for staff and students at night," he said.
