Dusty storm rolls through Durban, leaves city in disarray
Updated | By Lauren Hendricks and Natarah Nadesan
Parts of Durban were
in disarray on Wednesday morning after powerful winds brought down trees and
spread debris across the municipality.
More than half the city was plunged into darkness, after an explosion at the Klaarwater substation.
Aside from the outage, a dusty storm rolled through Durban.
The SA Weather Service's Julius Mahlangu says it would've been strange and confusing for people as thunder rumbled and a hot wind blew through the city.
He says this was due to a cold front that was supposed to move in.
"The cold front was approaching then we had conditions that are known as Berg winds, this is winds from the interior of the country, from the high lying areas around the Drakensberg."
But he says that cold front has now passed through the region.
Residents have also been recounting the moment the lights went out, and that sensational flashover lit up the night sky with green and blue streaks.
“The colours, it was blue, yellow and green - it wasn't bright and in a few minutes the lights went off and back on, then I heard a sound, it went BOOF!,” said a little boy from Durban North.

A man who lives in Westville says the flashes in the sky were quite bright in his area.
"The winds were extremely bad and trees had fallen over on our main roads - so some of them are blocked off."
Some people's imaginations ran wild on social media likening the event to an alien invasion or the end of the world.
