The municipality's put a hold on all water activities in the area after samples were tested and revealed the quality of water fell short of safety standards.

For now, you cannot swim at Isipingo, Ansteys, Amanzimtoti Main, Warner, and Winklespruit, Gavies, Baggies, Reunion.

eThekwini's Msawakhe Mayisela's cited health reasons when explaining the ban.

He says the latest round of tests showed that there has been an improvement at some beaches, but water quality levels deteriorated at others.

Beaches that remain open include Umgababa, Umkomaas, Brighton, and Treasure.

"We continue to test the quality of water in all our beaches; hence we have taken a decision to close some of our beaches in the south.

"We are happy that the quality of water is improving substantially in central beaches, however, those beaches still remain closed. We, therefore, are aappealing to members of the public to bear with us.

"We fully understand the inconvenience that this is causing but we are doing everything in our power to ensure the situation returns to normal."
