Durban's bad buildings targeted in city revamp
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Some owners of buildings deemed uninhabitable that need to be demolished in the Durban city centre are ducking and diving.

That's according to eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda.
Kaunda who says 33 abandoned and dilapidated buildings have been identified since the Inner City Regeneration Programme got underway in 2019.
He says 22 buildings that were mainly havens for dug activity have been refurbished in the Point area.

The regeneration programme is for now focused on Point because of its tourism potential.
Kaunda says some buildings have had to be torn down.
"We have demolished about three bad buildings in the municipality and we are negotiating with other owners to expedite the process of renovating their buildings.
"Those whom we are unable to trace, we will then be forced to go to court so that the court will give us the authority to expropriate them so that we can start rejuvenating them so that we can lift the face of our municipality.
"But with those who are not responding positively - will be forced to enter into that action."
