LISTEN: Durban woman swims coast-to-coast for plastic-free ocean
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
A Durban woman has begun her 1 500 kilometre swim to Cape Town to raise awareness on plastic pollution in the ocean.
Sarah Ferguson hit the water early on Monday morning, kicking off her mission from the Durban Undersea Club.
She's swimming under her Breathe Ocean Conservation NGO.
The ultra-distance swimmer plans to reach Mossel Bay in 10 weeks’ time.
"The first section is from here to East London, then once I get to East London, I have a little break like 10 days, then I go from there down towards Mossel Bay."
Once in Mossel Bay, the Durban North resident will do an educational tour on plastic pollution and the importance of the ocean.
She has given herself a year to complete her swim to Cape Town.
Ferguson says it's important for the younger generation to learn about what is happening to our planet, especially as climate change intensifies.
"Just like we need trees, we need the ocean phytoplankton. So the ocean is such a vast source of our livelihood from local fishermen. Even our foods and our supplements come from a lot of things that come from the ocean.
"It is an essential life source. If we don't protect it and the marine life in it we are going to cause serious damage and we already have if you look at climate change and issues that they are creating - it's really very important that we look after our ocean."
