Durban taxi assault places spotlight on women abuse

The KZN Network on Violence Against Women says the footage taken of an incident of assault in Durban will break the silence of abuse.

Taxi assault

The anti-violence women's group has commended the witness who filmed a man assaulting a woman before shoving her into a taxi, saying many women suffer in silence.

The video, filmed in the vicinity of Umgeni and Miller Road, has caused outrage on social media.

The footage depicts a woman standing outside a taxi before being hit by the man. She's then bundled into the vehicle.

Since the incident was posted on Facebook, some social media users criticised the witness for not intervening.

The 39-year-old Westville resident has told Newswatch that he'd wanted to do something but says the man had a gun.

The network's director, Cookie Edwards says the footage will be beneficial.

"Because of the stigma, they don't want people to know and they feel ashamed of being victims of abuse. It's happening all over and you don't have to be ashamed. You have to break the silence and come forward. All you need to do is take one step forward," she said.

These listeners have spoken to Newswatch about their views on the incident.
