Durban pupils aim for Guinness Book of World Records
Some 2100 Grade 9 pupils from schools across Durban will attempt to set a new world record at the Durban Exhibition Centre today.
They're trying to enter the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest practical science lesson. The current record is held by a group in India where 2000 pupils took part in a lesson during December.
The Centre for the Advancement of Science and Mathematics Education has spent more than a year preparing for the event.
The centre's Henrey Benson says today is all about building a community that loves science and is enthusiastic about the subject.
"This is a mass participation event. We have to get the numbers right, that's getting 2100 kids from 22 different schools to the venue.
"We have to have the equipment in order to enable them to actually participate in the practical lesson. We've got over 600 sets of practical equipment for the learners to actually engage in a lesson," he said.
