Durban residents are being urged to be patient and not disrupt or hinder planned fibre infrastructure installations around the city.

eThekwini says in some areas, fibre installations have also resulted in temporary disruption to water and electricity services, upsetting some communities.

The city says the current phase is prioritising areas including Verulam, Everest Heights, oThongathi, Phoenix, Padfield, Manors, Morningside, Glenwood, Amanzimtoti and uMlazi.

"We are appealing to our residents to bear with us. We are appealing to contractors to be ultra-careful when they are excavating but also we are appealing to our residents to inform us immediately once they have seen an instance whereby a pipe has been broken so that we'll be able to move with speed and return that situation to normalcy," says spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela.

He says the rollout is part of positioning the city in line with the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

"Those who use internet will tell you that there is nothing frustrating like have an internet that is very slow.

"But fibre optic cables will enable us to have access to internet that is of high speed more epically to our young people that we know very well in nowadays they are studying online, some are in search of job opportunities and many other things. So it will make life easier."
