The duo managed to flee from police during an operation in Newlands East on Tuesday that left two others dead.

Officers had made their way to the area after receiving information about the whereabouts of four wanted suspects.

KZN police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says they fled into bushes and shot at officers who returned fire.

"After the shootout, two suspects, aged 16 and 35 years old, were found to have sustained fatal gunshot wounds.

"Two unlicensed firearms and two magazines with ammunition were found in the possession of the deceased suspects. The search for the other two suspects who evaded arrest is underway."
