Durban pensioners targeted in new scam
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
EThekwini Municipality says it is not offering rebates to pensioners for water metres - as it warns ratepayers about the latest scam. It says scamsters posing as municipal officials have been contacting pensioners offering rebates and asking that they fill out forms.
The municipality's Mandla Nsele says there is no such rebate scheme at the municipality nor would it ask for cash payments.
"The only rebate offered by the municipality is a rates rebate," Nsele says, "Property owners qualify for the rates rebate on their primary property, when they turn 60".
Members of the public are urged to be vigilant in order not to fall prey to criminals, posing as municipal employees.
You can report any suspicious activity to the municipality on 0803 111 111.
