Durban NPO joins celebrations of Queen Elizabeth’s life

The South African branch of one of the oldest NPOs in the world says it's joined millions around the globe in paying respects to the late Queen Elizabeth.

St John SA's hosting a series of memorial events in and around Durban in honour of the monarch. 


The charity's Chris Martin says they have set up a station at their office for people to visit.

They will hold a prayer service and musical tribute this weekend and watch the funeral on a giant screen on Monday. 


There have been tearful farewells from people saying goodbye to the Queen as she lies in state in London. 


Martin says they feel it's important to pay tribute to the late monarch. 


"I think it is important to remember that in terms of her role as our sovereign head, it's always been dedicated to service. From a St John's perspective, we see this as a bittersweet moment."

"Bitter in the sense that it is a huge loss, losing someone of that magnitude that has in that time as being head of the monarchy, also our sovereign head of our order. 


"But sweet in the sense that she had an amazing legacy of service and an amazing legacy of strengthening our order leading it with dignity and respect."
