Durban North taxi protest causes major traffic delays
A minibus taxi blockade has led to bumper-to-bumper traffic in Durban North this afternoon.
The protest is said to be over the area's Chris Hani Road taxi route.
Local taxi association, the Umgeni Durban Liner wants the Inanda, KwaMashu and Ntuzuma taxi associations to stop picking up commuters along Chris Hani on their way from the Durban CBD going into the three townships.
They say taxi users should travel into town first and catch taxis to the three townships north of Durban from there, an exercise that will see commuters paying more because of the added travelling they will have to do.
Some of the roads affected by this afternoon's protest include Chris Hani, Umgeni and Blackburn.
The SAPS's Thulani Zwane says Greenwood Park police are on the scene, along with public order police and eThekwini Metro Police.
"The police are still in the area at North Coast (Chris Hani) and Umgeni Roads monitoring the situation. No arrests have been made at this stage and there's no damage reported," he said.
While trying to reach the scene earlier, Newswatch saw some of the minibuses that had been left unattended being towed by law enforcement officials.
