Durban NGO delivers aid at Glebelands Hostel

Aid organisation, the Gift of the Givers has stepped in at the crime-ridden Glebelands Hostel in Umlazi to offer assistance to the hundreds of residents affected by the ongoing violence in the area.

Twenty-one people have been killed this year alone at the hostel which is home to over 20 000 people.
The Pietermaritzburg-based organisation says they were asked to help by community activist Vanessa Burger together and community leaders.
Operations Manager for the Gift of the Givers Salim Sayed says they've supplied food, vanity and detergent packs that should last a family of six about a month to those who've been illegally evicted, lost jobs and had breadwinners killed.
"What we see is that there's so many people that are unemployed and most of the unemployment is caused by the violence. There are some people that are scared to even go to their jobs because they are threatened.
"We are trying to see if we can start some sort of project in the area to alleviate the poverty - if we could bring some self-sustainable projects in the area," he said.
