Durban municipal worker's racist social media post raises concern

The South African Human Rights Commission says it has yet to receive a complaint about a Department of Water and Sanitation employee at the eThekwini Municipality who put up a racial post on Facebook yesterday that created a stir on social media.

The employee posted a two-part picture - the top half showing monkeys sitting on and raiding a car while the bottom half shows a group of black community members jumping on and vandalising a car.

In the middle there is the caption 'Nailed it'. The image drew criticism and anger on social media.

Recently, a video emerged showing Durban real estate agent Vicky Momberg who had been a smash and grab victim ranting at police officers trying to help her and using the k*** word to describe blacks.

The commission's Isaac Mangena says such incidents chip away at the social unity that some South Africans have been working hard towards.

'"This basically divides us at the end of the day. It really begs the question as to what kind of society in future do we want to see. Do we want to raise our children as blacks on one side and whites on the other side. We're really concerned and we call on everyone to basically ensure that they take up this fight against racism," he said.
