While police continue their investigation into the stabbing to death of a 17-year-old grade nine KwaMashu pupil, his neighbours have taken in his little brother who has now been left alone at the family's shack in the township's hostel.
Ntuthuko Ncanana was stabbed on Monday outside his school during an altercation in which another pupil was also hurt.
Ntuthuko died on arrival at a local hospital.
Ntuthuko's neighbour, Nozipho Mchunu has told Newswatch that the weekend before Ntuthuko was stabbed - he took his sick mother to hospital where she remains.
Mchunu says the mother has been unresponsive and cannot speak, adding she does not yet know about her son's death.
"There are parents here at the hostel who have kids who go to school in the township and we're not sure about their safety now. Once we have laid Ntuthuko to rest and the suspect has been arrested we're going to go to court to ensure justice is done.
"If the court fail us we as a community will deal with the matter because too many children have been hurt just because they from the hostel," she said.
