Durban metro cop handed 20 years for lover's murder

The IFP Women's Brigade says the 20-year prison sentence handed down to a former metro cop who murdered his ex-girlfriend is extremely disappointing and an injustice.
Ndumiso Khumalo was found guilty of shooting and killing Zinhle Muthwa on New Years Eve. The 29-year-old's body was found on the side of a road in the Ndaya Reserve on the KZN South Coast on New Years Day in 2020.
Shortly after his arrest, the metro police confirmed that Khumalo, a constable, worked in the Durban Metro Police Multi-Operational Response Team. In January last year, It was confirmed that he had resigned from his position.
The couple were in a relationship but broke up in 2019, after Khumalo suspected Muthwa of being unfaithful. It's understood that he devised a plan to kill her after an altercation regarding one of her male acquaintances.
Chairperson of the IFP Women's Brigade, Princess Phumzile Buthelezi, says they don't believe the sentence is harsh enough.
"How could he be given such a short term in jail? He should be there for rest of his life.
"He is still young and can always come out of jail and start a new life, but not so for Zinhle, who was killed for no reason."
