Durban mayor condemns social media insults against Indians, Zuma

eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede has spoken out against racial intolerance and verbal abuse leveled against members of the Indian community - as well as President Jacob Zuma - on social media platforms.
"The abuse of social media to insult one of us, must be condemned. The abuse of social media - and whatever form of media that is used to insult your own President - let us condemn that," she said.
She was speaking at a sod-turning ceremony at Durban's south beach - where a monument commemorating the indentured labourers who where brought to Durban from India - to work in the sugar cane fields.
Gumede has also condemned recent statements about white people made by EFF leader Julius Malema in Newcastle and Bloemfontein where he appeared in court.
"Leaders like EFF about white slaughtering are wrong and barbaric. We strongly condemn the irresponsible statement by that leader. Such statements can plant seeds of racial division. SA belongs to everyone who lives in it," she said.
