Durban Labour building remains health hazard
Updated | By Anelisa Khubeka
While mopping up operations are underway at the KZN Department of Labour's Masonic Grove offices in Durban, some staff feel the building remains a health hazard.
A major water pipe burst in the building two weeks ago leading to water seeping through the ceilings down to the offices below.
Following the burst pipe there was a strong smell of urine and human waste permeating the building which led staff to believe it had been a sewage pipe that burst.
However the department has attributed the odour to the water from the burst pipe mixed with muck from the roof.
According to an employee, the building had to be evacuated last week because of the stench.
The employee believes that while the burst pipe has been fixed and cleanup has started, the damage done, the lingering odour and the general state of the building makes for unsafe and unhealthy working conditions.
