Durban international holiday scam couple to be sentenced

A Durban couple who ran an international holiday scam are waiting to be sentenced after being convicted of fraud.

Thirty-eight-year-old Megasen Chetty and 47-year-old Sarasvathi Pillay were arrested in May after several victims laid charges against them between February 2018 and October 2019.
At the time, police said the duo had been positively linked to14 counts of fraud allegedly committed in areas including Chatsworth, Phoenix, Malvern, Town Hill and Tongaat.
Other victims were urged to come forward.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Nqobile Gwala says Chetty and Pillay were this week found guilty of 18 counts of fraud.
"Both accused were found guilty of defrauding their victims of an amount of R1.2 million after they posed as travel agents who promised people holidays around the world.
“The matter was remanded to 21 October 2021 for sentencing in the Durban Regional Court."
