Durban hosts record bone marrow, blood drive
Updated | By Chanelle Lutchman
The Sunflower Fund says it's pleased at having been able to register a record-breaking 78 stem cell donors at the weekend.
The fund's Mandy Bergsma says the campaign was part of a blood and bone marrow drive on behalf of Durban student, Tashnika Rambali and other patients.
Twenty-year-old Rambali has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia.
Bergsma says currently, just over 71 000 people are registered nationally as donors but that this figure is too low.
"We essentially need 100 000 within each of our colour demographics. Every new donor we get increases those chances of finding that. Majority of Leukemia patients are young adults. There are a lot of myths out there and misconceptions - drilling in your bones, that they suck the marrow out of your hip.
"It's nothing like that - it's just a blood donation," she said.
