Durban explosion: eThekwini sheds light on Tuesday's power outage
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
eThekwini's head of electricity has shed light on the cause of the substation explosion that knocked out power to many parts of Durban this week.
Maxwell Mthembu says the lightning on Tuesday evening is to blame.
He says technicians were able to establish that problem started at Shallcross and not at the Klaarwater major substation.
Mthembu says a high voltage line at Shallcross that connects the two substations tripped, causing the explosion at Klaarwater.

He says the Shallcross substation was repaired and electricity was restored last night.
"As of now, based on the fault that happened on Tuesday evening not a single customer who is still suffering from that outage.
"Other customers who may be suffering are the customers who are suffering because of the normal outages that are happening in our network. But other than that everybody is back on and it is working 100%."
