The family of a six-year-old British boy whose foot got stuck in an escalator at a Durban shopping centre has returned to the UK with the child said to be recovering well and in good spirits.

Euan Hird's foot got caught between an escalator step and a platform while leaving the Gateway Mall in Umhlanga with his family last week.

Paramedics and members of the fire brigade worked for three hours to free him.

General manager of Netcare Umhlanga Hospital Marc Van Heerden says Euan has since underwent two successful operations on his foot.

''Euan Hird was cheerful throughout his time with us discussing every aspect of his care and progress with his surgeons and nurses involved in his treatment and care. Euan was a great inspiration to the staff and management at the Netcare Umhlanga hospital.

''It was a great pity that he had to go through this experience while visiting his family in South Africa however, I'm delighted to announce that he's recovered well,'' he said.
