Durban CPFs welcome new police initiative

Local community policing forums have welcomed a new national initiative by the police aimed at combatting crime.
The Country in Blue operational concept was launched in Amaoti, north of Durban, by Police Minister Bheki Cele on Saturday.
SAPS vehicles on patrol will have their blue lights on from 6pm to 6am as part of efforts to improve police visibility.
Tongaat CPF chairperson Nazir Sadack says the initiative has both pros and cons.
"We need more viability. As we getting into the festive season, crime escalates that's. History has shown that as we [get] closer to the festive season, crime escalates.
"As much as we are going to have these blue lights on from 6 to 6, I also think the human capacity with currently I think with most of the stations or in fact, not all the stations face a manpower resource issue from a vehicle perspective certain stations are low on vehicles.
"From a manpower issue, I know most of the stations in my cluster are low in terms of manpower. So in terms of that, yes, that would be a bit of a hindrance.
Phoenix CPF chairperson, Umesh Singh says it's an excellent initiative.
"We need to sustain it, especially during the late hours. I think one pf the problems people find is that there is no visibility. This will ensure visibility because of the blue light patrols."
