Durban conference focuses on rural broadband

The Telecommunications Department says costs remain among the biggest challenges in rolling out infrastructure for information and communication technologies.
The department is currently in Durban where the 10th GovTech Conference is underway.
The conference organised by the State Information Technology Agency is aimed at increasing the affordability of electronic communications services, including broadband.
Minister Siyabonga Cwele says the focus of the four-day session is also on improving service delivery through e-governance, by making ICT infrastructure more accessible in rural communities.
"The aim is to try and connect all government services to be available online. We're trying to make the ICT infrastructure more accessible to all our citizens. That's why we're starting the pilot in the poorest districts," he said.
