Mbuso Moloi received a three-year prison term, suspended for five years, in the Durban Regional Court on Friday.

He was further sentenced to 18 months correctional supervision and 16 hours of mandatory community service a month.

Moloi was seen in video footage stealing items from a Woolworths store in Durban's Essenwood area during the unrest and looting in July 2021.

He loaded the basket of goods into the boot of his Mercedes Benz and left.

In March, Moloi admitted to stealing.

The riots brought businesses in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng to their knees as stores were ransacked.

In August 2021, eThekwini Municipality said in Durban, there had been over R2 billion in property damage, over R500 million in damages to machinery and equipment, and over R1 billion in stock losses.

"As the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry, we believe that nobody is higher than the law. As organised business, we welcome the judgement that was brought on Mbuso Moloi. Furthermore, as the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry, we also request and we would like for the law enforcement agencies to continue ensuring that those are behind the unrest face the full might of the law," says the DCCI's CEO Palesa Phili.
