Durban 2022: Pupils share excitement

Some pupils at George Campbell School of Technology in Durban say they feel privileged to have witnessed history being made this morning.

Around 300 people gathered on the school's sports fields to watch Durban being announced as the host of the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Durban 2022 will be the first Commonwealth Games to be held on African soil.

Young Durbanites have even told Newswatch the Games could be their time to shine on the international sporting stage.

A lady who spoke to us says her love for the city has grown.

"I love the city more. The city is going places. We're going to get international recognition," she said.

A male learner says this must encourage young South Africans to work harder.

"It's an extremely amazing to think that I might be there in a few years if I work hard enough and I think it's just setting a bar for some of the young children in South Africa,

"It's a motivation for pupils to participate in sports and get there," he said.

Durban was the only remaining city bidding for the event after Edmonton in Canada withdrew earlier this year.
