Duo in court for murder of Winterton farmer

Two young men accused of murdering a 46-year-old farmer in Winterton will again stand before a magistrate on Thursday.

Neil McKay was found in his wheelchair in May with his hands tied. 

He had been strangled.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Nqobile Gwala said: "Last month, a team of dedicated Detectives from Winterton SAPS managed to make a breakthrough when they arrested two suspects. The first suspect Bongani Mkhwanazi (18) was arrested at Khethani area in Winterton.

"The second suspect Bokang Petrose Tsatsi (23) was arrested at Acaciaville in Ladysmith where he was hiding. He was found in possession of deceased’s binoculars and a speaker.

"They made their court appearance last month. The two suspects are appearing again before the Colenso Magistrate’s Court today for a formal bail application."

Meanwhile, a 33-year-old man has been jailed for housebreaking and murder.

Sboniso Msomi was sentenced to and effective 31 years in prison by the Pinetown Regional Court.

KZN National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Natasha Kara says Msomi committed crimes in Kloof and Wyebank in 2019.

"Msomi and his co-conspirators were fleeing from police after committing house robberies in the Kloof and Wyebank areas. They had stolen jewellery, TV, laptops, cell phones, cash and digital cameras amongst other things.”

"While being pursued by the police, and in an exchange of gunfire, they lost control of their vehicle on Field’s Hill and crashed. Msomi tried to escape but was arrested near the crash site in possession of items belonging to the victims of the housebreakings. The NPA welcomes the successful prosecution."
