Drought takes toll on livestock in Jozini
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
While residents in Jozini are satisfied with the municipality’s efficiency in providing water, their livestock have not been spared the severe impact of the drought.
Newswatch's Anelisa Kubheka has been visiting northern KZN which is one of the regions hardest-hit.
Driving into the area, one is greeted by the sight of many cow carcasses, lining the banks of the Mthalane River.
Cebolihle Mthembu whose home is a stone's throw away from the river says her family to date has lost 30 cows and only four are left.
The mother of five says their tap water doesn't last the whole day and they have had to collect water from the same river.
Other residents say at least the carcasses are dry now. Two months ago, they had to sift maggots from the water they collected from the river.
The community fears in a couple of months there won't be a drop left.
