Drop in municipal debt owed to Eskom: Hlomuka
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The Department of Cooperative Governance in KwaZulu-Natal says it's seen a dramatic decline in municipal debt owed to Eskom.
But MEC Sipho Hlomuka warns Newcastle, Ulundi and Mpofana are the three municipalities that still need to sort out their longstanding issues.
"These municipalities have however, been supported by facilitated agreements on payment plans with power utilities those municipalities that are owing Eskom, lets sit down and have a payment plan."
Hlomuka has given an update on the status of debt levels in municipalities ahead of the local government elections.
He says many are now filling the vacancies in senior management, to close administration gaps.
"The vacancy rate across the KZN municipalities has reduced to 12.7 percent by September 2021."
