Drop in fuel prices on the cards
Updated | By Shaun Ryan
It is a game of wait and see when it comes to next month's fuel prices.
At the moment, consumers could be the winners in June, with a drop in the fuel price on the cards.
According to the Automobile Association of South Africa's latest fuel price prediction, petrol could go down by around 24-cents a litre, while diesel could be 20-cents cheaper. Illuminating paraffin stands to decrease by 21-cents.
The AA based its figures on unaudited mid-month fuel price data released by the Central Energy Fund.
However, spokesperson Layton Beard says the volatility of international oil prices and swings in the Rand / Dollar exchange are making predictions as tricky as ever. Despite consumers looking like they're ahead right now, Beard is warning that a lot could change by month-end.
"The Rand started the month relatively strong against the Dollar, then it weakened slightly and we are seeing it picking up again against the US Dollar. We are seeing the same type of swings in terms of the international oil price," he said.
Beard says one should not rely too much on the given figures, as the fuel picture could look quite different by the end of the month.
