Dozens of shacks gutted in Sea Cow Lake fire

Firefighters are still trying to douse a fire that broke out at the Sea Cow Lake informal settlement in Durban, this morning.

According to the Durban Fire Department, about 25 shacks have been gutted by the blaze. 


Emergency services from Ntuzuma, Umhlanga and Durban North, also raced to the scene to help ensure that the fire didn't spread to other shacks.

Division Commander, Jesse Yasudas, says it's going to take them at least another hour to extinguish the fire.


"We're currently busy damping down and dousing the flames that are still present amongst the rubble. We're moving rubble and we're damping down all the flames and the hotspots. There's no casualties at the moment. The councillor for the area was in attendance, taking care of displaced people. Disaster Management teams are also involved with that process," he said.

In July, a fire broke-out in the same area - leaving 200 people homeless.


The cause of blaze is unknown at this stage.
