Dozens of pets yet to be claimed: Durban and Coast SPCA

The Durban and Coast SPCA says it continues to see an alarming number of animals abandoned or unwanted by their owners over the festive period.
The society's Lindsey Concer says they took in 600 stray cats and 325 stray dogs over December alone.
"It doesn't seem to be improving - unfortunately. Just on the 30th and 31st of December - we took in 14 dogs handed over by their owners. Throughout the month of December we took in 280 dogs handed over by their owners and 111 cats handed in by owners," she said.

She says they're currently treating three injured dogs for injuries that were brought in on New Year's eve. It appears the frightened animals ran away from home due to the noisy fireworks.
"There were unfortunately two dogs that were dead on arrival that were hit by cars on the night," she said.
