eThekwini Metro Police say no one's come forward yet to claim ownership of a dog that was shot in Verulam on Thursday.
A man and his three-year-old daughter - were walking on Russom Street - when the animal tried to attack the toddler.
The father shielded his child and was mauled, suffering injuries to his arm.
Durban metro police spokesperson Parboo Sewpersadh says officers patrolling the area - had no choice but to shoot the dog.
"The father is believed to be traumatised. Apparently, the dog was about to maul the child and the father got hold of the child and threw the child away from the dog and the dog began to bite the father."
Meanwhile, the Durban and Coast SPCA has urged pet owners to ensure that their pets are microchipped and vaccinated.
