Discussion needed to see how State can better support local government
Updated | By Khatija Nxedlana
The South African Cities Network feels a discussion is needed around how to re-engineer the State to support local government better.
A State of SA Cities Report was presented in Durban yesterday.
Panellists included mayors of eThekwini and Msunduzi, both of whom commented on the need for more funding from national and provincial governments to provide services to communities.
The network's CEO Sithole Mbanga said the report found that cities are the drivers of economic development but more support is needed.
"One of the things that we expect municipalities and cities to do is to deliver on economic development, yet they do not have the resources to do that.
"If you have to drive a economy, not only must you be part of the policy decision making process, but you also have to have resources," he said.
