Medics have treated several people who've been injured.

This resident explains what he witnessed this afternoon at Inanda Dube Village.

I saw white clouds gathering in the sky, and then suddenly a strong wind swept through the area and started ripping roof tiles off the houses,” one resident of Inanda’s Dube Village told Newswatch.

“This happened for a while, we saw more things fly around, causing more damage as it moved away. We were scared because we had never seen anything like this before. “

Newswatch saw residents scrambling to get to their homes, crossing roads as buckets of rain continued to pelt down on the area.

In Dube Village, strong winds blew off the roofs of several homes, while other houses completely collapsed, and electricity cables were hanging from the light poles.

Residents described strong winds that moved in a circular motion, destroying their homes, and sending them running for their lives.

A number of residents in Dube Village were hurt, but authorities say there were no confirmed deaths yet.

KZN MEC for Human Settlement Sipho Nkosi also arrived in the area on Monday afternoon, saying they are working to determine the number of residents affected.

Meanwhile, a video purporting to show a tornado that hit the area has been going around.

South African Weather Service forecaster Odirile Modipa has confirmed that they have seen videos but are yet to verify them.

"There have been some reports of some really rough weather over the Inanda area, and there have been some videos circulating where something has exampled a tornado.

"We have not yet been able to verify whether that is something that has occurred today or if it is true for those areas, but we have received reports of some damage to property in those areas as well as some heavy rainfall leading to a bit of flooding in those areas. We have not yet been able to verify the tornado activity."
