Dermatologists issue sun warning ahead of festive season

As the holiday season approaches, dermatologists are voicing their concerns about the risk of skin cancer from excessive sun exposure.
Doctors working with the Cancer Association of SA say melanoma incidence rates in South Africa have reached epidemic proportions surpassing rates seen in traditionally high-risk countries like Australia and New Zealand.
One dermatologist says he diagnoses up to 30 cases a week in his practice alone.
Cancer survivor Naniki Seboni was diagnosed with Stage 3 malignant melanoma at the age of 24.
She says prevention is the best action you can take.

She is advising people to protect their skin from the sun and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day.
"It is crucial for everyone to be vigilant and proactive about their skin health. Sunscreen is your shield, know your skin, consult a health care professional immediately. It's also important to know your melanoma risk factors."
