Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Frustrated citizens are calling on Home Affairs to intervene in what they're calling 'a failing system' at their offices across the country.
Deputy Minister Njabulo Nzuza made a surprise visit to the Umgeni Road branch this morning.
Nzuza spoke to management as well as those queuing at the office about the challenges they're facing.
Newswatch arrived to find hundreds of people standing, some sitting on the pavement outside the office.
Some arrived as early as 4am to join the queue.
Those who were lucky enough to make it into the office say the system had been continuously going on and offline.
Parents who had been standing outside, complained that special lines for the elderly or those with young children.
Nzuza has vowed to turn the situation around.
"We came here to make sure that we understand what are the challenges faced by our people. We have been hearing quite a lot about problems at Home Affairs. The issue of queues is what we saw today as the main issue. People have arrived here at 3am in the morning."
Nzuza says they hope to solve the issues encountered.
