Dept studying SAHRC report on reviewing affirmative action
Updated | By Bernadette Wolhuter
Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant says she's considering asking the SA Human Rights Commission to explain its views - that the country’s affirmative action and employment equity policies are unconstitutional.
The minister launched various training programmes aimed at creating jobs in the aviation, maritime commercial diving and agricultural sectors - in KZN today.
The recent report by the SAHRC has made recommendations aimed at better aligning the policies with the Constitution and gave government six months to report back.
The minister says the report is still being studied.
"When I was addressing the maritime summit, I said the constituencies must look at that report and try to discuss the report even if it means you have to invite the Commission itself. This is so that they can explain themselves.
"Therefore, I will just hold it there because we are still going to discuss it as a department," Oliphant said.
